Borrowing and requesting
Most of the material at the University Library can be borrowed for four weeks, and possibly renewed.
Main content
Library card
Borrowing of books and other materials requires a library card with correct contact information.
The library cards work at all the university libraries.ÌýFor students and employees at the University of Bergen,ÌýtheÌýstudent/employee ID card or the student APP functions asÌýaÌýlibrary card. For other users, a valid photo-ID is required for receiving a library card.ÌýLoss of your library card should be reported to the library as soon as possible.
Loan periods
The patron is personally responsible for all borrowed material, making sure that the material is returned within the deadline in the same condition as it was when borrowed.
The normal loan period is 4 weeks. If no-one else orders the material, the loan period will be automatically renewed up to the maximum loan periodÌý(usuallyÌý4 months for students and external patrons, and 6 months for employees).
Patrons are responsible for returning materials by the due date. In cases where the parton expects to be away for extended periods (e.g.Ìýinternational exchanges), materials should be returned before departure. Sub-loans (loaning material you have borrowed to others) are not permitted.ÌýÌý
Note that for some materials, other rules apply. This includes curriculum literature andÌývariousÌýspecial collections. Materials borrowed from other libraries (interlibrary loans) follow the rules of the owning library.
Overdue itemsÌýandÌýreplacement
Three days before due date you will receive a reminder. If the material is not returned, recalls will be sent. After two recalls have been sent, the patrons will receive a notice that the item must be replaced, and their library card and borrowing/ordering rights will be suspended.
Replacement of an item is the responsibility of the patron who borrowed it, and can be done in one of three ways:
1) Return of the original item
2) Buying a replacement copy for the library
3) Payment for the item, which has a minimum cost of 1000 NOK per item (by Vipps or invoice).
Patrons should contact their library to do this and resolve any issues. The deadline for fulfilling the demand for replacement is 10 days from when the replacement claim was sent. Failure to replace the item(s) will result in the claim being transferred to Financial Services at ÐÒÔË·Éͧ¼Æ»® who will send an invoice to the user. If the claim is still not fulfilled, the case will be transferred to Fair Collection (External debt collection agency), and the claim will have to be paid to them.
Lost or damaged materials
Patrons have a responsibility to replaceÌýany borrowed items that becomeÌýlost or damaged. "Damage" includes, but is not limited to, underlining,Ìýhighlighting,Ìýwriting,ÌýorÌýanyÌýother defacementÌýof items.ÌýMaterials which have been reported lost, but are later found,Ìýremain theÌýproperty of the library.ÌýÌý
Requesting
If you want to borrow books that are available at your library, you need to go and find them on the shelves. You can request books that are not available, and books that are available at our other libraries (exeption: if you belong to one of the four libraries in the city center, you have to go and pick up the books at the other three libraries in the city center).
For students and employees at the University of Bergen, we offer the service of interlibrary loans from within Norway or abroad. With these loans, the owning library’s rules apply when it comes to loan periods, renewals and recalls. If you wish us to apply for renewals, please contact your library.ÌýÌýÌý
For all kinds of requests you useÌýÌý(sign in to My account). You receive a pick up notice on SMS or e-mail when the requested material is ready. The material needs to be picked up within one week from the notice date.
Students Registered in Distance Learning Programmes
If your place of residence is outside Bergen, and you do not make periodical trips to your place of study, you can have the materials sent to your place of residence. Alternatively you can ask your local public library if they can place a request for you.
Remember that you are responsible for returning the material to the University Library when the loan period is over. You can often return it to your nearest public library, or send it to the University Library by post. You must cover the return shipping yourself.
To take advantage of this offer, please contact your library.
