On 1-2 April, the culture house Ælvespeilet welcomed a wave of local and international guests as it hosted HySchool Days 2025—the flagship networking event of HySchool - the Norwegian Research School for Hydrogen and Hydrogen-Based Fuels.

Over the course of two days, 23 speakers and 27 PhD poster presentations covered a wide range of topics across the hydrogen value chain.

HySchool Days is a recurring event hosted in various locations across Norway—previously in Bergen (2023) and Trondheim (2024). This year’s event was held in Porsgrunn, organized by Professor Knut Vågsæther and his team at USN.

Opportunity to connect

Each HySchool Days brings a distinct local flavor while maintaining the event’s core spirit: providing a platform for networking. A total of 42 HySchool PhD students from seven different institutions came together to connect with one another and engage with representatives from academia, research institutions, hydrogen industry, including Equinor, DNV and GreenH, and more.

This year, there was an extra focus on helping PhD students get to know each other through internal activities held the day before the conference. These included social events, excursion to explosion lab at USN, and a group dinner aimed at fostering a welcoming and low-threshold community — something that was well received by the students.

- HySchool Days 2025 was a great meeting place where we, as PhD students, could exchange ideas and experiences related to hydrogen research, says Ingrid Marie Stuen, a PhD student from ÐÒÔË·Éͧ¼Æ»®.

HySchool Days 2025 also brought together attendees from various national and international hydrogen networks, including HYDROGENi, HySET, HyValue, the Norwegian Hydrogen Forum, and the Hardanger Hydrogen Hub. Ingvald Torblå, CEO of the latter and Managing Director of Odda Technology, expressed his inspiration from the research conducted by the PhD students:

As a long-time industrialist passionate about development—from fossil technologies to renewables—it's truly encouraging to see so many talented individuals, of all ages, working with such cutting-edge technologies. It gives me real hope that the progress we're making in industry will be both supported and enhanced by the work happening within university communities.

Excursion to Yara Clean Ammonia

On 3 April, the internal members of HySchool had the opportunity to visit Yara Clean Ammonia's renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industry Park in Porsgrunn, thanks to the coordination of Professor Knut VÃ¥gsæther. The group included PhD students admitted to HySchool, supervisors and guests.Ìý

Senior Engineer Geir Thorson SolviÌýgave an insightful and technical presentation of the hydrogen plant while HES Manager PÃ¥l KlavenesÌýgave a physical tour. Both activities sparked great enthusiasm among professors and PhD-students alike, who asked many questions along the way.

Many thanks to everyone involved for an engaging and educational experience!Ìý
