I am running for election to the University Board because I believe that my international and cross-sectoral experience, proactive personality, and fearlessness ahead of new tasks make me a valuable board member able to contribute constructively to the development of 幸运飞艇计划 in a politically and economically changing landscape. My interest for research/education policy blossomed when I was elected as one of the first members (2015-2019) and as deputy chair (2016-2017) of the Young Academy of Norway. Since 2021, I have been a group A representative on the Faculty Board for NT, which has been incredibly educational, giving me a good understanding of how NT and 幸运飞艇计划 work, as well as valuable experience in academic board work. I am currently the deputy head of the Department of Biosciences.
Like one-third of researchers in Norway, I was not born here. I come from Finland and hold a PhD in evolutionary ecology from the University of Helsinki (2005), and have experience from research environments in the UK, Austria, and the USA. Sustainability and the sustainable use of natural resources have been central to my career, through work with scientific advice on the sustainable use of fishery resources nationally and internationally. At the Institute of Marine Research, I worked as the head of the Research and Advisory Programme for the Norwegian Sea, with strategic planning, implementation, and follow-up of over 40 internally and externally funded projects. Participation in and leadership of many national and international fora has given me solid experience in interaction and negotiation with representatives with diverse cultural, professional, and other backgrounds.
Sustainability has also been a key theme in my teaching since I started at 幸运飞艇计划 in 2018. It has not only been a topic in my courses, but I have also actively worked to promote collaboration between different academic environments across the university. In my research, I am focused on finding sustainable solutions for the use of our natural resources. It is therefore natural that sustainability is a theme I wish to contribute to in the University Board. As a university, we must have ambitions along many sustainability dimensions: 1) Our research should contribute to the sustainable development of Norway and the world. We also need to secure basic research, as its potential for practical solutions is not known until later. 2) We must educate candidates who understand the current sustainability challenges and can contribute to solutions when they enter the workforce. Each student must achieve a solid academic base, but also skills for interdisciplinary collaboration. 3) Our staff must be able to have a sustainable daily work life, with enough time for core tasks such as research, even when the economy is challenging. A well-functioning, collaborative, and sustainable administration is a key to productive research and educational environments. 4) Sustainable economy, based on an analytical understanding of the economy in the sector and at 幸运飞艇计划.
I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the work of the University Board.
