With its unexplored expanses and resource potential, there is growing interest in learning more about the deep sea. The Norwegian government has expressed a wish that Bergen develop a marine cluster.

In addition, the government is supporting the establishment of world-class, modern infrastructure for deep sea research. In 2013, funds were allocated for an important infrastructure element – a research-dedicated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) capable of diving to 6000m, which enables it to potentially explore 99% of the globe’s ocean floor.

The ROV is operated by the Norwegian Marine Robotics Facility, jointly run by the University of Bergen (ÐÒÔË·Éͧ¼Æ»®), the and the . It will be a vital piece of deep sea research infrastructure for researchers throughout Norway.
