CCBIO on Career Development (2020)

Young researchers face an enormous uphill struggle when it comes to taking their next career steps, having an overwhelming number of decisions to make even years before the time comes.

鈥淲hat comes after a postdoc? How and聽when can I become a PI? How can I聽build my own research group? Should聽I move location?鈥 are just a few of the聽big questions they have. One major聽complication is a wide range of career聽paths and structures across universities聽and countries. Academic careers have聽become dynamic systems that are聽continuously changing 鈥 trying to adapt聽to the needs of the institutions and the聽society. With its established network of聽researchers, world-wide expertise, and聽resources, CCBIO is in a unique position聽to help its next generation get ready.

The current situation in Norway
A recent study by NIFU (Nordic聽Institute for Studies in Innovation,聽Research, and Education) showed that聽only one in five postdocs at Norwegian聽universities have become associate or聽full professors within five years after聽their postdoctoral period ended1. This is聽despite qualifying for faculty positions聽being the institutions鈥 declared main聽goal of postdoctoral positions. Even聽more surprising: half the postdocs聽have left academia within five years聽after their postdoctoral period is over.聽This report comes after many years聽of debate into the use of postdoctoral聽positions and what it should mean to聽do a postdoc. A postdoc is not just a聽continuation of a PhD, and a postdoc聽should not be 鈥渏ust another researcher鈥.聽During their postdoctoral periods,聽researchers are supposed to acquire聽the skills and tools needed to make聽their next career steps, whether that is聽inside or outside of academia. However,聽postdocs all around the world struggle聽to turn their temporary positions into聽full-time, stable careers2.

Climbing the ladder: what should you聽do during your postdoc?
Most postdoctoral researchers in聽Norway reported of lacking a career聽plan and proper follow-up of their聽progress. While some researchers聽proceed to have successful careers聽outside of Norway, others struggle聽to make it within their Norwegian聽home institutions. What should you聽do during your postdoc? You will hear聽many answers to this, but most likely:聽everything! That is a daunting task.聽Your main priority should be on your聽research activities while increasing your聽independence, developing your own聽ideas, showing seniority in publications聽and collaborations. Generally, first- and聽last author publications are a must, and聽then come the 鈥渙ther tasks鈥 you should聽embark on. From the start of your聽postdoc, you should get an overview聽of the skills, teaching, supervisory,聽(international) networking, and funding聽application and acquisition experience聽expected by the end of your postdoctoral聽period.

While planning for your career, you聽should always consider the possibilities聽at your home institution. Could you聽become a (co-)supervisor for master聽students and PhD candidates? Could聽you gain lecturing experience? Can聽you apply for your own funding or聽co-apply? The University of Bergen聽provides its junior researchers with聽these opportunities, but many do not聽know that these options are available
to them.

CCBIO鈥檚 policy on career development聽
CCBIO wants to ensure that the next聽generation of researchers have the tools聽they need to make the right decisions聽when it comes to their careers. In聽addition to the already comprehensive聽stimuli from the CCBIO Research School聽for Cancer Studies, we are therefore聽introducing the CCBIO Masterclass聽Program聽where up to 10 post-PhD researchers聽will participate each year and receive聽mentorship, guidance, and training.聽During their one-year Masterclass聽period, the candidates are encouraged聽to discuss their career paths widely聽and to review their course and aims聽throughout the process. CCBIO thereby聽aims to motivate and challenge the聽participants. But most of all: we aim to聽facilitate their climb to the top.
