BBB seminar: Janet M. Lord
Delta - a deadly serious PKC
Main content

Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of 11 isoenzymes that play a role in the regulation of several key physiological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. One of the isoenzymes, PKC-delta, is particularly associated with apoptosis. In this talk I will describe some of the work that uncovered the pro-apoptotic role of PKC-delta and our more recent work using small molecule activators of PKC-delta as anti-cancer agents.

Professor Janet M. Lord's interest in protein kinase C (PKC) began 20 years ago in her first post-doctoral fellowship at Oxford University, and concerned the role of PKC in insulin secretion. She then moved to Birmingham and set up her own group working on the differential involvement of PKC isoenzymes in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. More recently she has been translating the basic understanding of PKC isoenzymes into therapeutic targeting of these isoenzymes and is involved in two clinical trials, one for skin cancer and one for leukaemia using a novel PKC activator PEP005. |
