"We already know that women are economically penalized when they have children. We have now found that they experience a new economic 'shock' during menopause," economics professor at the University of Bergen, Rita Ginja, says to Aftenposten.

Not all women have children, but all women go through menopause.

Rita Ginja and her colleagues at University College London, Stanford University, and University of Delaware have investigated how menopause affects the workforce, by examining public records in Norway and Sweden. The results have now been published in a working paper, , and the study is featured in a major news story in , , and .

The income drop is the most significant finding in the study. After being diagnosed with menopause by a doctor, there is an average reduction in annual income for these women of 4 percent, four years after the diagnosis.

The income drop increases over time and can be as high as 10 percent for some.

"A combination of two factors influences the income drop: Some women stop working, and some work fewer hours," says Ginja.
