The Martinez Lab studies the relationship between molecular structure and function to understand human health and disease.听We use a combination of computational and experimental techniques, within the fields of biophysics, biochemistry and cellular biology.听We aim to develop new therapeutic options for inborn errors of metabolism, in particular Phenylketonuria and neurotransmitter disorders (e.g. tyrosine hydroxylase deficiency).

The structure of the enzyme implicated in phenylketonuria (PKU)

The structure of full-length phenylalanine hydroxylase in complex with the cofactor BH4 is presented in the most recent issue of PNAS. As the cofactor is also used as a therapy for PKU, this structure is of medical importance.
