The Picture Collection

The Picture Collection at the University Library is one of the largest archives of historical photographs in Norway.

The Collection is housed in the ground floor of the Stein Rokkan building, and is open to the public. A substantial percentage of the archive has been digitalized, and is published in various online databases.

Painters on ladder

The Sepia-tone photograph shows a man standing on a ladder with his back to us, and the shadow of the man and the ladder. The motive is simple, but shows Ralph L. Wilson's exploratory approach to form.

Vastun waterfall

Knud Knudsen鈥檚 landscape photographs belong to the best of the early Norwegian photographic art. They were taken for sale to tourists. In this picture of the Vastun waterfall, the cascading water melds into a white blanket, in sharp contrast to the rough, dark mountains.

Private Secretary

A boy, perhaps ten or twelve years old, focuses intensely on a typewriter. He types on it with his left hand, while the right writes with a big feather pen. Three other pens are tucked into the front of his cardigan.
